“In my paintings, there is no painted light. It comes from outside.”
For this series, I stretched a traditional Moroccan fabric, Tarz, over stretcher bars. Ruptures et passages brings together twelve paintings in two groups: six are mounted on this richly detailed fabric, while six are left as raw canvas, covered in a monochrome beige — sometimes with no paint at all. I then intervened with an off-white acrylic that melts into the pattern: you see it, but only just.
In my paintings, there is no painted light. It comes from outside. This is painting that depends on the light of the world. These works demand a certain kind of looking. A slowing down. Attention. They do not reveal everything at once.
For me, this series is a dialogue. Between two cultures, between two materials, between tradition and abstraction. But it is also an attempt to preserve memory without freezing it. To let craft live on, even in its fractures.
