“The traces left by time are not fixed elements, but active forms.”
Résurgence revolves around the notion of the imprint and of what resurfaces through time. Inspired by marine fossils discovered in southern Morocco, the work questions the memory of materials, the traces left by ancient presences and the ways they persist in the present.
The triptych unfolds in three stages. The first image is a starting photograph, capturing the fossils as they appear, as visible remnants of a buried past. The second is the result of digital work: the backgrounds are removed, isolating the fossil forms and detaching them from their context, as if extracted from the rock. The third reactivates these forms through relief printmaking. Custom matrices were made to fit the removed contours, turning the silhouettes into surfaces to be carved and marked.
This passage from photographic image to print sets two gestures in dialogue: that of technology, which captures and fixes, and that of the hand, which incises, reveals and transforms. Printmaking evokes the very process of fossil extraction, while photography acts as an imprint of the real. Together, these media build a tension between permanence and erasure, between what endures and what disappears.
Résurgence invites viewers to consider the traces left by time not as fixed elements, but as active forms, capable of reappearing, transforming and producing new narratives. The work thus offers a reflection on material memory and on our own relationship to the imprints we inherit, interpret and pass on.
