“The door suggests opening and passage, but also closure and obstruction.”
Mémoire persistante – résistance de l’oubli draws on archives of Palestinian newspapers, used here as raw material and as a medium of memory. These printed fragments, carrying histories, narratives and often marginalized voices, are transferred onto wooden panels that I cut and assembled by hand to form a structure evoking a door.
The door becomes a symbolic device: it suggests opening and passage, but also closure and obstruction. It acts as a threshold between visibility and erasure, between intimate memory and collective history. The hand-carved wood places the project within a slow temporality, opposed to the rapid and often ephemeral circulation of media information.
Onto this surface of archives, I intervene in acrylic, painting symbols and plant elements that cross both the image transfers and the panels. These painterly gestures reactivate the documents, lifting them out of their fixed status to make them a living space, charged with resistance.
The work questions the persistence of memory in the face of attempts at erasure, and affirms the role of creation as a site of transmission, protection and re-inscription of narratives threatened by oblivion.
